What’s Available at Moira Gums?

Hi there,

If you have come to this page you are obviously curious about what you can expect if you decide to book a stay at our lovely Guest House.

Thank you for considering visiting Moira Gums. We try to provide as much information as possible so that our guests have good idea what to expect when they come to visit.

As we are a small town of only 180 people, we do not have the facilities you would expect in a larger town or city, but we believe this is part of our charm. Please be aware that shops may close earlier than you expect, especially in winter.

We thought that the following might be some useful information to help you plan your visit.

1.Moira Gums is located 5.6kms from Barmah Township, 30 kms from Echuca/Moama (twin tourist towns) and 50kms from Shepparton. Both these centres have Dan Murphy’s Woollies, Coles, and Aldi supermarkets for your convenience. Please check their trading hours as they may differ from the larger centres.

2.Nathalia is 30km from Barmah and has a IGA supermarket and liquor but does not have extended trading hours.

3. Barmah Roadhouse has take-away food, staples and most groceries. As you would expect they are more expensive than supermarket prices, but the people are very friendly.

4. Barmah pub has a bottle shop for alcohol purchases and limited meals during the COVID 19 restrictions. Bookings are essential. Take away meals are available, but you need to check as this is subject to change.

5. All beds have pure cotton bedlinen and feather pillows. We also provide cotton towels and a basket of old towels beside the front door for muddy feet (human and canine).

6. We have an Aldi coffee pod machine and milk frother and provide a box of 16 pods for your visit.

7. We will also place 1 litre of UHT milk in the fridge for your use.

8. You will find tea (Twining’s English Breakfast and Herb teas) instant coffee, cooking oil, salt, pepper, and some spices.

9. Our kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of pots, frypan, electric skillet. Small electric mixer, toaster, kettle.

10. The kitchen stove runs on bottled gas. Please let us know immediately if you are low on gas and we will attend to changeover. For safety reasons, please do not attempt this yourself.

11. We have some hens, a vegie garden and fig and citrus trees. Please feel free to help yourself to any produce (in season).

12.The home has evaporative air conditioning ducts in each room except for the bathroom and laundry. The lounge, dining and each bedroom also have ceiling fans (those in the bedroom are remote controlled).

13. There is a rubbish bin in the kitchen and rubbish bags in the drawer. A recycle bin is located outside underneath the barbecue. If the bins are full you can let us know and we will attend to them or there are larger rubbish bins located in the carport.

14. The Broken Creek runs along the front boundary of the property over 100 metres through a gated paddock. It’s not very deep and is suitable for canoeing or fishing. Not sure it is deep enough to swim in but the dogs would enjoy it. The Moira Lake is located over the bridge in the National Park and people swim there (no dogs in the National Park). There are two swimming spots near the Barmah Bridge on the Murray River where people do swim one is just of the main street called “The Willows” and the other is a sandbar near the bridge.

15. We do not recommend swimming in the Murray and have attached the following advice for your information from Murray River.com:

FATALITIES DO OCCUR. BE CAREFUL.”

Water safety is paramount on and in the Murray River.

Anyone that uses the river needs to understand and be aware of the dangers.

It is always strongly recommended that children wear life jackets near and around water at all times.

  • The water is murky and there are hidden dangers.
  • If you duck dive in the murky waters you could sustain a permanent head, neck, or back injury…or death.
  • You could get snagged when you dive no one will be able to see you.
  • Its recommended that you check with locals before swimming.
  • Always be aware that tree swings may either break or there could be hazards below.
  • Feel with a stick to check for snags and hazards.
  • Be aware that unfortunately people do throw things into the river including sharp objects.
  • There are different levels and parts of the river that could be deeper.
  • Currents can be strong in certain parts of the river so be aware.
  • Never jump from houseboats or bridges as people have died on impact of unseen snags or slipped and hit the edge of the boat.
  • Always be aware of craft in the river and the dangers near propellers, jet skis and larger boats.
  • If you have a medical condition please be aware of your levels, endurance, and capacity to swimming.
  • Never drink alcohol and swim…seems good at the time but it could prove fatal.
  • Be aware of snakes near the river…and they can swim.
